Sacramento International Airport Master Plan

Master Plan Chronology and Documents
Terminal Modernization Plan

What is a master plan?
An airport master plan is a plan for the development of Sacramento International Airport over the next 20 years. The plan includes the following elements:

This is the first master plan update for SMF in more than 20 years.

Who is preparing the project?
The Airport staff manages a team of consultants who have specific expertise in the various aspects of the project. PB Aviation is the lead consultant and the Hoyt Company and HOK Architects assist them.

Why was the project suspended?
The Master Plan Study was temporarily suspended following the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The suspension was necessary to allow time to determine the effects September 11, 2001, on the Airport and airline industries. These effects were felt in areas such as: security measures, parking usage, and traffic activities.

Where in the master plan process did the project be restart?
Previously, the vision for the development of the airport had been established and the inventory phase and forecasts of activity had all been completed. A review of the forecasts has been done to see if they are still appropriate and this will be discussed at future meetings. The project restarted with the evaluation of a series of nine airport development alternatives which include various airfield layouts and land use concepts that can meet the needs of the airport over the long term.

What is the project schedule?
Below is a project schedule that shows the various project elements and the review meeting that will be held. The goal is to identify the recommended airport master plan by the end of 2003.
