ILEAV Project Participants
Participants in the SMF ILEAV program include Southwest Airlines (SWA), America West Airlines (AWA), United Airlines (UAL), and the Sacramento County Airport System.
Sacramento County Airport System (SCAS) :
The Sacramento County Airport System ILEAV program includes twenty compressed natural gas (CNG) shuttle buses that transport customers to and from the Central Terminal Area (CTA), public parking lots, and rental car facilities. A CNG fueling station is centrally located and is accessible by both airport tenants and the general public 24-hours a day. The Sacramento County Airport System also plans to upgrade and expand this facility to meet the projected CNG demand at the airport.
The SCAS program will also include purchase of three NEVs to be used by the Planning and Information Technology & Telephony divisions for travel on airport property. The NEVs operate below a 25 MPH speed limit and will be primarily used to shuttle staff between Airport offices.
SCAS recently performed a power upgrade at Terminals A and B to improve power supply quality to the SWA and UAL ground support equipment operations. This upgrade features electrical charging stations that recharge GSE vehicles.
Southwest Airlines (SWA) :
Southwest Airlines represents more than 50 percent of daily flight activity at Sacramento International Airport . SWA led efforts to convert GSE at International to alternative fuel and has demonstrated innovative ways of achieving results in a cost effective way. SWA has extensive prior experience working with alternative fuel GSE at airports throughout the country in addition to SMF including Phoenix Sky Harbor , Chicago O'Hare, LAX, Tulsa , and Ontario (CA).
Recently, SWA installed a new generation of “super charger” systems funded by Electric Transportation Engineering Corporation (ETEC) to support a fast charge demonstration project with 12 electric baggage tractors at International. The contribution to the SMF ILEAV program includes the conversion of 16 belt loaders from gasoline to electric power and the purchase of four baggage tugs to replace diesel tugs. The SWA program also includes installation of eight super chargers and related components at Terminal A.

America West Airlines (AWA):
America West Airlines, located in Terminal A, is eager to deploy alternative fuel GSE soon and does not have any alternative fuel GSE currently operating at SMF. The existing AWA fleet consists of diesel and gasoline GSE including belt loaders, baggage tugs, and other associated GSE. AWA provides ground handling operations for Continental Airlines and JetBlue Airways in addition to their fleet.

United Airlines (UAL):
United Airlines, located at Terminal B, handles approximately 25 daily flights. The existing GSE fleet includes five electric baggage tugs, two electric belt loaders, four diesel belt loaders, five diesel bag tractors, and five conventional chargers, manufactured by Toyota . All have been deployed at SMF since 2002. In addition to the existing GSE, UAL will deploy the following equipment through the ILEAV program: four electric baggage tugs, four electric belt loaders, and three super chargers.
