Alternative Fuels
SMF and its tenants own and operate a very large and diverse fleet of alternatively fueled low emission vehicles. The SCAS has encouraged the use of these new low emission technologies by providing the specialized refueling infrastructure needed for their daily operation. Specific applications include:
-
Electric-powered handicap lift devices, designed for wheelchair-bound commuter airline passengers, are operated by airline tenants. It complies with ADA regulations, and is emission free.
-
SuperShuttle operates a fleet of CNG powered shuttle vans, and the Sacramento Independent Taxi Owners Association (SITOA) operates low emission gasoline vehicles.
-
Public-access Electric Vehicle charging stations in the Terminal B daily parking area and under the solar photovoltaic panels for the recharging of public and airport electric vehicles.
-
A public access alternative-fuel facility on Airport Boulevard provides increased CNG fueling capacity to support public and SCAS vehicles.
-
Two solar photovoltaic arrays have been installed at the airport by SMUD to reduce the airport's use of conventional electric energy sources. The newest large array provides approximately 130 kW while also creating shaded parking for 80 vehicles.
-
Electric-powered aircraft support systems are on all passenger loading bridges, eliminating the need for aircraft ground support equipment powered by internal combustion engines.
